Coogee is very close to Sydney and it is just about 8 km from the Central Business District of Sydney. Coogee is part of the local government area of the City of Randwick. The postcode of the suburb is 2034. Coogee is one of the highly populated suburbs of Sydney. The population of the suburb as per 2011 statistics is approximately 14,000. Other popular suburbs around Coogee is Charing Cross, Clovelly, Tasman Sea, South Coogee, Maroubra and Randwick.
Coogee is a very popular swimming beachside suburb and the boundaries of the suburb are Clovelly Road, Carrington Road and Rainbow Street. Coogee beach attracts thousands of visitors every year. The name of the suburb Coogee comes from the Aboriginal term Koojah, which means a smelly place. Another meaning of the term koojah is stinking seaweed. Even today, the seaweed gets washed away along the shores of the beach but it is removed regularly before it starts decaying.
Coogee was established in 1838 and the public school in Coogee was built in 1876. This suburb had its rail connectivity as early as 1902. Eventually, this suburb became a popular seaside resort place. The surf life saving club of Coogee was established in 1907. This suburb originally had tram services and it served the residents of the suburb until 1950s. The public transportation option of the suburb today is bus services.
Coogee, Sydney offers excellent options for recreation and for sports. Some of the local festivals of the Coogee suburb include The Island Challenge, which is a swimming competition, which started in 2000s and held in the last week of November. The Coogee Arts Festival is held in February. This festival is held in the parklands on the southern side of Coogee beach. Another important Coogee event is the Annual Coogee Family Fun Day. This event is held on the first Saturday of December.
